A Safety Observer’s role is to observe the operation of plant machinery (when working around electrical assets) to ensure it does not make any contact with electrical powerlines or underground services.
They are the machine operators eyes and ears on the ground to ensure no contact is made with electrical assets. Accordingly, we understand that our Safety Observer’s role is to ensure that the work is carried out in accordance with approved procedures and rules regarding electrical safety
K.A.G.’s Spotters are Tas Networks certified and highly qualified in overseeing the operation of vehicles, equipment and plant, vegetation workers and arborists in the vicinity of powerlines, underground cables and other electrical services, and are competent in the following areas :
- The hazards posed by overhead electrical assets.
- The design envelopes for the equipment / plant being used.
- The operation and uses of the equipment / plant being used.
K.A.G. Spotters will remain at the task for the entire time the plant machine / workers are required to operate, in accordance with the relevant SWMS. Our spotter will only observe one item of plant machinery at any time. They position themselves carefully so that they can monitor the distance between the equipment and the power lines, and will provide early and effective warning to the equipment operator of any potential encroachment on the “No Go Zone”.
For any works between 10 metres and 8 metres, a register Safety Observer is required. This is known as the “Safety Observer Zone”. For any works conducted within 8 metres from a tower powerline, permission / permit is required from Tas Networks.
